Expert opinion in the British National Formulary (BNF) is that the need for continuing treatment for urinary incontinence should be reviewed every 46 weeks until symptoms stabilise, and then every 612 months. Using a suprapubic transducer position the urinary bladder is located and centered on the screen the width and anteroposterior dimensions are traditionally measured. The EAU therefore recommends that antimuscarinics should be avoided in men with a post-void residual volume more than 150 mL. The vast majority of subjects reported the presence of LUTS (91.4%, n = 458), while only 43 subjects out of 501 (8.6%) reported no LUTS ( Table 1). The post-void residual may be formally measured using one of several proposed formulae, or (more commonly at the point of care) semi-quantified into abnormally elevated and normal. How much urine residual is normal Postvoid Residual Measurement Less than 50 mL of residual urine is normal, and 200 mL or greater is abnormal (Nitti and Blaivas, 2007). Fifty-one subjects (10.2%) were being treated with anticholinergic medication and 14 (2.8%) with an alpha blocker. The post-void residual (PVR) urine test measures the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. Chronic urinary retention (CUR) is the accumulation of urine in the bladder that results from incomplete or inadequate bladder emptying. Seventy-seven participants (15.3%) had a relapsing-remitting disease course, 317 (63.3%) a secondary progressive course and 107 (21.3%) had primary progressive MS. Testing should include a postvoid residual (PVR) urine evaluation, which is a simple, noninvasive, and cost-effective volume measurement of urine within the bladder that can be performed with. The 90th and 95th centiles in the 150 men were at bladder. The mean age of the sample was 56.0 ± 12.3 years and mean MS duration was 21.4 ± 10.8 years. Post-void residual urine volume <20 ml on more than one occasion is considered abnormal (Figure 3) (28). INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: It has been claimed that post-void residual urine (PVR) below 150 ml rules out voiding dysfunction in women with stress urinary. Ninety-nine (66) men had residuals which were between 0 and 4 ml. ![]() ![]() Five hundred one subjects (68.9% female, n = 345) were included in the analysis.
